A Red Lake man is going to prison for beating a reservation forestry employee with a baseball bat last summer.

27 year old Richard Smith was sentenced yesterday by Federal Judge and Newfolden Native, John Tunheim to nearly seven years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to assault-causing serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors say the defendant was at his mother’s home on the Red Lake Indian Nation on a work related matter in June 2017 when Smith struck him from behind with an aluminum baseball bat.

The forestry worker suffered a severe brain injury and was hospitalized for more than three weeks.
