Secretary of State Steve Simon is urging lawmakers this session to release a million-and-a-half dollars in federal funding for statewide election cycber security upgrades.
Simon says Minnesota was targeted by Russian hackers in the 2016 election, and though they didn’t breach the system, he says it is still important to stay, “one step ahead of the bad guys. And that gets harder every year. I like to say that it’s a race without a finish line. We know that the hackers will be back, and they will probably be smarter next time.”
Simon says failure to access the funds this year would likely result in “a direct threat to our Democracy.” Simon says the money would be used mostly to hire three employees for four years to do coding.
