Bond Set in Kortan Murder Case

Bond was set today at 50 thousand dollars conditional / a half million unconditional; in the case of a Red Lake Falls woman charged in the death of an infant in her care.

30 year old Sarah Kortan made her Initial Appearance in a Rule #8 Hearing this morning before District Judge Tamara Yon in Red Lake County District Court.

Kortan is charged with Murder in the Second Degree – accused of assault and malicious punishment of a child – allegedly leading to the death of the 2 month old infant known in court records only as “J.T.K.” ..

According to court documents, Deputies responding to a 911 call found the child unresponsive but alive when they arrived at Kortan’s Apartment June 20th. The baby was taken to Sanford Thief River Falls then transferred to Fargo where the child was eventually diagnosed as “brain dead,” and died after being taken off life support.

During the investigation, Kortan admitted she had dropped the little girl a few days earlier, the baby striking the stove and kitchen floor – however; doctors at the UND Forensic Pathology Lab say the child’s injuries were not consistent with a fall – but with “intentionally inflicted trauma;” including multiple skull fractures – retinal hemorrhaging and detachment.

Kortan’s next court appearance is a contested omnibus hearing August 14th.
