One fatality, more than two dozen injured, hundreds displaced by a tornado that tore through Watford City in North Dakota’s McKenzie County early yesterday morning.
National weather service officials say the EF2 Tornado struck just after 12:30am, destroying the city’s Prairie View RV Park.
Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger confirmed the death of a one week old baby boy, the child critically injured after the family’s trailer was overturned in the storm.
Sheriff Schwarzenberger said the infant died Tuesday morning as preparations were being made for an emergency transfer to a Fargo Hospital.
Among the 28 injuries; 9 considered life-threatening, with First Responders initially overwhelmed by the wreckage; 122 structures, including; Recreational Vehicles, mobile homes and outbuildings destroyed, with some 200 people, many oilfield workers and their families, left homeless by the storm.
The tornado, packing winds of 127 miles per hour, struck without warning. The Watford City Civic Center was opened to provide temporary shelter yesterday.
