Deloris  Adeline Holten was born on April 3, 1930; in Prairie Center Township, Walsh County, ND, the daughter of Nels Conrad Nelson and Bertina Caroline (Strand) Nelson.  She was baptized at South Trinity Lutheran Church in Walsh County, near Grafton, ND and she was confirmed at the Mission Church in Newfolden, MN.  When Deloris was 3 years old, she moved with her parents and brother to New Maine Township, Marshall County. She attended Good Will School in New Maine Township until eighth grade, then she attended Newfolden High School.

On May 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Albin Holten in Newfolden MN. After they married they traveled the area working road construction and picking potatoes.  Lived in Newfolden for a time, and  moved to Thief River Falls where they began operating a Star Mail Route to Warroad MN.  Soon after, they purchased their first home in Thief River Falls, MN, where she still resided today.

Deloris worked at Oakland sanitarium and then cooked at the hospital. In 1965, she started working at JCPenny’s and in 1972 she took over the mail route after her husband passed away. She retired from JCPenny’s after 34 years. Deloris was a member of many groups over the years, most recently; the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Zion Lutheran Church, and the Vernon Nelson Family Hunting Party.

Deloris used to always say, “Yep, it’s quite a life,” and what a life she lived. Whether she was out hunting down the next treasure at a rummage or auction sale or actually out hunting deer with her dad and  family, she kept her life pretty interesting. You could never tell her she couldn’t do something, if you did, watch out, she’d prove you wrong. She was a jokester and a prankster; just ask her brothers and sisters. Deloris loved her family, both immediate and extended. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for you. Deloris was there for anyone and everyone, she did her best to attend every wedding, birthday, holiday, program, you ask her to come and she was there. She spent her life making other people happy or making them laugh, that is where she got her most joy. You would never leave empty handed or with an empty stomach when you came to her house. She couldn’t pass up a good game of bingo, whether it was on Thanksgiving with family or at the Eagles or VFW.  She enjoyed playing cards…….or maybe it was taking your money, either way it was good time. She was a friend, aunt, sister, mom, and grandma to everyone.  Some of her favorite past times she liked to do included sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knitting. She longed to be out in her garden and canning all the vegetables she could find. She would always sneak a few peas while she was picking them. She was the best cook; some of her specialties were meat-a-balz, potato klub, lefse, pumpkin and lemon meringue pies. She loved to talk on the phone and keep in touch with her loved ones.

She is survived by her two children: Deborah Holten of East Grand Forks, MN; Michael Holten of Thief River Falls, MN; Two grandchildren: Conrad (JoAnn) Holten of Thief River Falls, MN; Angela (Kristopher) Holten-Welker of Grand Forks, ND; Two great-grandchildren Senna and Ellie Holten of Thief River Falls, MN; Furry grandchildren: Harley, Teefee, Smokey and Roxie; Siblings: Joan Roppe, Marian (Arnold) Peterson, Janice (William) Olson, Vernon (Sheila) Nelson, Gary (Karen) Nelson, Jerome (Patty) Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.

She is Preceded in death by her husband Albin, child Roger, great-grandchildren Kristopher and McKayla Holten-Welker, brother Marvin Nelson, sister-in-law Avis Nelson, brother-in-law Wallace Roppe, special friend, Harold Steinhauer, and her furry companions, Rocky, Lightning, Black Magic, and Einstein.
