Edwin Berggren, age 98, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at Pioneer Care Center, Erskine, MN.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Rance Berggren Officiating. Burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM with a 5:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Edwin Ingvold Berggren was born on May 20, 1920 on the family farm in Silverton Township, Pennington County. He was the son of Erik August and Helen (Johaneson) Berggren. He was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church. Ed attended school through the 8th grade and worked on the family farm.
On August 5, 1944 Ed married Thelma (Della) Skretvedt in Thief River Falls, MN. They made their home on the Berggren family farm. He worked for O&M Elevators in Thief River Falls and continued to work on the farm. He retired from there and went to work for Greenwood Cemetery Association. The family farm was sold in 1970 and he moved his family to Thief River Falls, MN. He retired from his second job about 2005.
He was a member of Silverton Lutheran Church where he held several different offices over the years.
Ed enjoyed many fishing trips with family and friends. Especially fishing halibut off the coast of Alaska and fishing walleye on the Lake of the Woods and Upper Read Lake. He enjoyed several years of deer hunting with his sons and several brother-in-laws, and nephews, and all the deer stories that went with. Ed and Della loved their trip to Norway. He enjoyed visiting with relatives there and reconnecting with his heritage.
Ed loved music. He taught himself to play the accordion. He played at wedding dances and various events with several bands back in the day. He could play a waltz, polka, and shottish flawlessly. He loved spending time with this family and friends.
He is survived by sons Larry (special friend, Karen Joy) Berggren of Hungry Horse, MT, Dale (special friend, Linda Arnold) Berggren of Thief River Falls, MN, Rance (Deb) Berggren of Fairbanks, AK; daughters Karen (special friend Ken Jones) Berggren of Thief River Falls, MN, Diane (Isaac) Mack of Alexandria, MN, Linda (Durlyn) Rux of Thief River Falls, MN, Deb (Ron) Johnson of Alexandria, MN; grandchildren Dawn (Wesley) Brinkman of Thief River Falls, MN, Travis Berggren of Hungry Horse, MT, Tara Berggren of Hungry Horse, MT, Tim Culp of Belle Plaine, MN, Leslie (Rob) Nesteby of Mora, MN, Joe (Sally) Sletten of Alexandria, MN, Jim Sletten of Alexandria, MN, Cory Berggren of North Pole, AK, Mike Berggren of North Pole, AK, Chris (Lori) Rux of Holt, MN, Melissa Rux of Thief River Falls, MN, Mitch (Melissa) Berggren of North Pole, AK, Kari (Mike) Chapman of Hindsdale, NH, Nicki (Mark) Hoerner of Columbia Falls, MT, Chelsea (Ryan) Freitag of Minneapolis, MN; several great and great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Ed is preceded in death by his wife Thelma (Della) Berggren; son Donavon Berggren; his parents Erik and Helen (Johaneson) Berggren; brothers Theodore, Alphen, and Carl Berggren; sisters Julia Berggren, Helga Kaushagen, Gladys Sundt, and Ellen Newton; grandchildren Terry Berggren, Josh Berggren, Chad Bugge, and Angie Berggren; and several brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
