Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Evangelical Free Church, Thief River Falls, MN, with Reverend Steven Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Holt Cemetery, Holt, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Gladys Helen Svanajord was born August 15, 1919 in Highlanding Township, Pennington County, MN, the daughter of the late Aslak and Anne (Haugestul) Svanajord. In April 1930, when she was nine years old, the family moved to Tribune Sask., Canada, where she grew up and attended school until the fall of 1934, when the family moved back to Goodridge, MN. She finished elementary school in Goodridge and later attended Maplewood Academy at Hutchinson, MN.
On November 12, 1939, Gladys was united in marriage to Frank Heinze in Thief River Falls, MN. The couple ran a truck gardening business on the Heinze home farm located on the airport road, Rocksbury Township, until 1974, when they moved into Thief River Falls. Gladys worked as a saleslady at Bostwicks Department Store for some 30 years.
She was a former member of the Trinity Church, the Golden Year’s Club, Women’s Circle and stewardship workshop. Gladys enjoyed flowers, vegetable gardening and was active in the Sow and Hoe Garden Club. For many years the Club planted flowers at the Pioneer Village and plots along Highway’s 59 and 32 entering Thief River Falls.
She enjoyed entertaining, also baking homemade bread and sometimes shared it with family and friends. Gladys belonged to the Rocksbury Homemaker Club and the Sons of Norway and was currently a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Thief River Falls.
Gladys is survived by nephews and nieces, Robert (Carol) Dahl, Newfolden, MN, Wayne (Nancy) Dahl, Mentor, MN, James (Bonnie) Dahl, Bemidji, MN, Sandy (Bert) Gjovik, Bismarck, ND and Vernon (Peggy) Gunderson of Newfolden, MN and many grandnephews and grandnieces; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Bennie; sisters, Gena Gunderson and Thelma Dahl; half-sister Anna Wagner; one niece; and one great niece.
