Gregory Schmitz left this world on December 18, 2018 after decades long battle with depression.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM in Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Red Lake Falls, MN with Jeffrey Lytle Officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

He was born on July 7, 1964 to Arthur and Joan (Welsch) Schmitz. He was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. Greg attended St. Joseph’s School through 8th grade and graduated from Lafayette High School. He went on to college at Bemidji State University where he graduated in 1986 with a degree in graphic design. He lived most of his adult life in Roseau, MN where he spent his career as a graphic designer for Polaris Industries. He was committed to his work and made lasting friendships there.

Greg was a bright and inquisitive boy who always wanted to know how things worked. He spent countless hours tearing apart and fixing every kind of mechanical device he could get his hands on. As a teenager and throughout his life he had a passion for motorcycles, snowmobiles and anything with a motor.

It was while working at the Bemidji airport during college that Greg discovered his love for flying. Shortly thereafter he obtained his pilot’s license. He logged thousands of hours flying throughout his life and expressed that some of his happiest moments were in the skies over the landscape of northern Minnesota. Last year he attained a lifelong dream of flying his own plane to the Oshkosh aviation convention.

Greg was a devoted son, brother and uncle. He was a man with a sharp wit and sensitive heart who was always willing to come to the assistance of a family member or friend in need.

Loving family members include his mother Joan (Welsch) Schmitz, brothers Michael (Katsushi) Schmitz of Minneapolis, MN, Mark (Jolene) Schmitz of Fosston, MN, Steven (Sheila) Schmitz of Spirit Lake, IA; nieces Gemma (Schmitz) Kleinschmidt , Beth Schmitz; nephews Luke Schmitz, Tyler Schmitz, Matthew Schmitz, Ryan Schmitz, Ben Schmitz; and many cousins and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his father Arthur Schmitz.

Gregory Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, MN died on Tuesday, December 18 in Roseau MN at the age of 54 years, 5 months and 11 days. May his memory be blessed and kept close to our hearts.
