Marion Bernice Erickson was born August 20, 1931 in Thief River Falls, MN, the daughter of Selmer and Bertha (Lee) Erickson.  She was baptized and confirmed at Reiner Lutheran Church in Goodridge, MN.  Due to her mother’s poor health, Marion became a caretaker at a very early age.  In addition to the household and motherly duties, she also helped her father carry in wood and assisted with the farm chores by operating and cleaning the milk separator.  She attended Goodridge Elementary School and Goodridge High School.

On November 8, 1947, Marion was united in marriage to Herbert Newman Vraa at a chapel in Wannaska, MN.  Their witnesses were her brother Stanley Erickson and friend, Leora Vraa.  They purchased the “home place” in Reiner Township in Goodridge, which was homesteaded by Herbert’s father, Gilbert. Together they had dairy cattle and did small grain farming.  To this union six children were born:  Gary, David, Donald, Susan, Richard, and Marilyn.  Marion continued the farming operation even upon the unexpected passing of her husband Herbert, in 1974.

Marion’s favorite activity was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She enjoyed babysitting and all of them were treated to her famous donuts, buns, cinnamon rolls, oatmeal cookies, and potato salad.  Family was important to Marion and she hosted many family get-togethers and birthday celebrations. Marion enjoyed reading, having coffee with friends, being active and working with her hands. She was a meticulous painter. Marion would always say, “You get your work done and then you can rest.”  For Marion, that was very seldom.   Marion was a perfectionist and there was never a dirty dish in the sink.  She shared this gift with the community by cleaning the Goodridge Municipal weekly for fifteen years.  She enjoyed the friendships she made there.

Marion was a member of the Rosendahl Lutheran Church, Ekelund Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxillary, and served as a Reiner Township Election Judge.  She served as a Sunday School teacher at Rosendahl and organized the yearly Christmas programs until it closed in 1965.  At Ekelund, Marion continued to teach Sunday School and was the treasurer for the Ekelund Ladies Aide for many years.

Grateful to have shared her life are her children:  Gary (Valerie) Vraa of Brooklyn Center, MN, David Vraa of Goodridge, Donald (Berny) Vraa of Goodridge, Susan Eck of Bemidji, Richard Vraa of Goodridge,  and Marilyn (Robert) Miller of Goodridge;  grandchildren, Lesley (Jeffrey) Brouse of Thief River Falls, Courtney (Jason) Salo of Goodridge, Shane (Barb) Vraa of  Anoka, MN, Marisa (Jeremy) Jones of Roswell, GA, Kenneth Vraa of Minneapolis, MN,  Jon (Amy) Miller of Minnetonka, MN, Kacey (Ryan) Stromlund of Thief River Falls, Robbie (Sadie) Miller of Goodridge, and Jesse (Taylor) Eck of Bemidji;  great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Jaxon, and Hudson Brouse, Jorja and Chesney Salo,  Aidan Senior and Graysen Vraa, Suwannee Miller, Maggie Stromlund, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marion is preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Herbert; her parents; brothers, Stanley Erickson and John Erickson; father-in law and mother in-law, Gilbert and Helen Vraa, sister-in-law’s, Henrietta Erlandson, Marian Hollenbeck, Clara Miller, Odessie Vraa, and Gertrude Buentemeier.
