Erna Carol Flatgard was born February 7, 1937 during a horrible snow storm in Terrebonne Township
in Red Lake County, MN. Her parents were Edwin and Caroline (Larson) Flatgard. Her father, Edwin, introduced his fourth daughter to her sisters by bringing down a baby shoe box with Erna inside-likely weighing less than five pounds. She was raised in various rural homes in Red Lake and Pennington Counties, settling near Oklee. Her sister, Ina, remembered Erna would laugh and giggle and was a rascal to her older sisters. She graduated from Oklee High School at seventeen years old.
Erna attended Teachers Training in Thief River Falls. She taught in rural, one room school houses near Radium and Western Pennington County, School District 7.
Erna married Arlo Scholin on June 30, 1957 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Oklee. They made their home in Bray Township where they farmed over the years, raising hogs, beef cattle and grains. She helped in all areas of the farm, especially harvest. Erna was active in Black River Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and helping with the Black River Singers in the 1970’s. She was active in the Ladies Aid groups and later WELCA, attending district meetings and conferences. Erna’s passion for special causes over the years included Sunday School projects, and sewing and assembling quilts, layettes, book bags that have been distributed worldwide.
Erna and Arlo traveled to the Mission, TX area for over 30 years and made many friendships of residents of the J-5 RV Park. They became their winter family and looked forward to the southern friends and games of pinochle and other activities.
Erna enjoyed people and visiting with almost anyone. She liked flowers, reading, sewing, watching and feeding the birds. She looked for “teaching” opportunities her entire life, to tell people about something she had read or heard. She was positive toward life and went about her day the best she was able to.
Erna is survived by children, Jocy (Greg) Teske of North Oaks, MN, Tom (Lucy) Scholin of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Reed Teske of White Bear Lake, MN, Darian (Alex) Mott of St. Croix Falls, WI and Kayden Scholin of Thief River Falls; sister, Ina Hurst of Carmichael, CA; sister-in-law, Alveda Scholin of Crookston, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo in 2012; her parents; two sisters, Eunice Goodoien and Junette Stockton; nieces and nephews, Sharon, Duane, Ronald, Denise, Donna, Alvin and Taylor.
