LaVerne Hamre, 79, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

The funeral service to celebrate Laverne’s life will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 10, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. John Golv and Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will follow at Community Cemetery in St. Hilaire, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at Zion Lutheran Church.

LaVerne Melvin Hamre was born April 18, 1940 son of Melvin and Nora Gladys (Olson) Hamre, raised on the family farm in Grand Plaine Township, Marshall County, MN. He went eight years to Country School District 76 and four years in Goodridge High School graduating 1958.

On September 15, 1963, LaVerne was inducted in the United States Army and stationed in Korea for 13 months in the Signal Corps. He was Honorably Discharged in 1965.

On September 15, 1966 LaVerne was united in marriage to Beverly Larson of Thief River Falls, MN. To this union three children were born, Tawnya, Kirk and Kirby. LaVerne and Beverly lived on a farm 9 miles west of Thief River Falls, in Numedal Township.

LaVerne was employed at Hartz Foods in Thief River Falls as a truck driver for twenty five years until 1990. He was forced into retirement due to a heart attack. On the farm the family raised Registered Shorthorn Cattle. Ole The Ox was born. LaVerne and Beverly trained Ole to pull an ox cart. Ole’s top weight was 2650 lbs. They were very proud of Ole and took him to many events.

LaVerne served as a township supervisor for 25 years and also served on Oak Ridge Church Council. In 1973 LaVerne was asked to serve on the Pennington County Fair Board which he did proudly until the time of his death.

Beverly passed away on May 16, 2001. LaVerne continued on the farm until 2002 when he sold the farm and moved into Thief River Falls. In 2002 LaVerne met Connie Peoples. LaVerne and Connie were married in 2009. Connie had three children, Linda, Amber and Katy. LaVerne and Connie enjoyed traveling, camping, took a trip to Hawaii and enjoyed retirement. “I was blessed with two very good wives in my lifetime.” Connie died December 29, 2017.

Survivors include children, Tawnya (Tim) Panek, Kirk (Kim Skogstad) Hamre and Kirby (Kathy) Hamre; step-children, Linda Peoples, Amber Peoples and Katy Collins; grandchildren, Amber Robertson, Ashley (Jeff) Crist, Logan Hamre, Cole (Ashley) Hamre, Hope (Austin) Zavertnick, Kris (Christina) Kvick, Alex Hamre; great-grandchildren, Barrett, Korben & Cora Hamre, Owen & Kaden Kvick, August & Lincoln Zavertnick, Hailey Crist; sisters, Frances Aandal and Barbara Picolet; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sharon Hamre, Gloria Larson, Howard (Nancy) Henschel, Betty (James) Lessard, Harold Moose, Mary Ann (Ron) Gold, Myrtle (Eric) Turnquist, Scott Houser; and many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by wives, Beverly and Connie; parents; brothers, Leighton (Marilyn), Gerald and Ronald Hamre; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond Moe, Raymond Aandal, Bernard Picolet, Lester Larson, Cliff (Carmen) Larson; and Carol Houser; nephew, Kevin Hamre; and many other relatives and friends.
