Memorial Service for Kathryn Elizabeth Nelson will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Kathryn Elizabeth Nelson was born on August 14, 1925 in Union County, South Dakota to Katie (Lake) and Earl Akin. The family moved to a farm northeast of Grygla in 1926 and later to rural Goodridge in 1928.
Kathryn attended school in Goodridge, Minnesota, graduating in 1943. In June 1943, she moved to Bremerton, Washington to work at the Puget Sound Navy shipyard until 1946.
Kathryn worked as a waitress and clerked at a store in Minneapolis from 1947 to 1949. She moved back to Thief River Falls where she continued to work as a waitress and clerk. Kathryn worked at Johnson’s Riverside, S.L.S. from April 1971 to January 2008.
She was united in marriage to Nels Henry Nelson on November 2, 1959. They had two daughters, Jeanette and Karin, in addition to the two sons, Terry and Randy Dempsey, that Kathryn had from a previous marriage.
As a child, Kathryn enjoyed having sleepovers with friends, working on the farm, riding her horse and roller skating. As an adult, she enjoyed reading, sewing, camping and traveling, visiting 40 states and Canada. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; she and Henry often took them with on vacations to a cabin at the lake or camping.
Kathryn was active in church in Women’s Ministry and teaching Sunday School.
In her later years she enjoyed traveling to Georgia to visit with Karin, Steven and Slater.
Survivors include Terry Dempsey of Thief River Falls, Jeanette (Jeff) Eckstein of Thief River Falls, and Karin (Steven) Rost of Bloomingdale, GA; grand-children: Charity (Rich) Koenig, Kris (Mark) Sides, Terry M. Dempsey, Philip Stoutenberg, Kajsa (William) Mooney, Vanessa DeHaan, Marissa DeHaan and Slater Rost; great- grandchildren: Caedron, Mallorey, Liam, Evangeline, Macauley, Adrian, Abbi, Jacob, Julia, Cecilia, William, Mikaela, Callie and Drakin, and great-great grandchild, Soranna.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Nels Henry; son, Randy Dempsey; parents; sister, Jennie Mack; brother-in-law, Donald Mack and niece and nephew, Sharon and Larry Mack.
