Donald “Don” Bergerson , 86 of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away with his loving family by his side on Monday, August 19, 2019 at Greenleaf Assisted Living Facility.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN, with Pastor Alex Amiot officiating. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Two Harbors, MN, at a later date.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the memorial service on Saturday at the church.
Donald Elroy Bergerson, the son of Hogan and Carrie (Sampson) Bergerson, was born on September 30, 1932 at home in the Benwood Community in Roseau County. Donald was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He attended school in District 87 and Wiskow School until 8th grade.
On January 19, 1954 Donald was united in marriage to Rose Marie Palm in Wannaska, MN.
After marrying, Don began employment in Grand Forks, ND. In 1955 He worked for a Reserve Mining Company in Silver Bay, MN, until being called for service with the U.S. Army. From 1956 until 1958 Donald served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Donald served in the Reserves until 1964. After discharge he returned to Reserve Mining where he worked as a furnace operator until the plant closed in 1986. Don and Rose Marie worked as caretakers of Center Island for 3 years when he received the call to return to work in Silver Bay, MN, for Cyprus. Don retired in 1995. While working full-time for Reserve Mining he worked several part-time jobs including school bus driver, furnace repair, fuel oil delivery, and workbus. After retirement he drove beet truck, potato truck, and was a security guard in Yuma, AZ.
Don’s favorite pastimes included reading, cars, work, fishing, hunting, trap shooting, and dancing – especially with the love of his life.
Don was a member of the Moose Club in Two Harbors, MN, where he served as governor for two terms. He was also a member of the Eagles and the American Legion. Don was a former member of the Gloria De Cristo Church in Yuma, AZ, and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN.
Don is survived by the love of his life Rose Marie, his daughters, Sandra (Tim) Peterson of Thief River Falls, MN, and Teresa Bergerson of Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren, Eric (Mandi) Peterson, April Peterson, Kyle Minnick, Katie (Shawn) Fischer, and Michael Taute; great-grandchildren, Logan Peterson, Soren Peterson, Nathaniel Fischer, and Miles Fischer; sister, Mabel Urbon of Chesterton, IN; nieces and nephews, Margene (George) Hughes of Lake Stevens, WA, Lauren (Paul) Mache of Chesterton, IN, Dawn (Russ) Duty of Chesterton, IN, and Bill Urbon of Chesterton, IN, Glen (Linda) Murray of Lapeer, MI, Deb Stallings of Imlay City, MI, and Loretta Ebel of Washington; and lifelong friends, Ray and Arlene Svir and their family – Alan, Rene, Bobby, Carrie, Keith, Tammy, and Mitchell Svir, of Two Harbors, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings – Allan, Rudolph, Helen, Thelma, Nora, Morris, Hogan, and Olaf.
