Loren Race, 85, of Goodridge, MN passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Valley Assisted Living in Thief River Falls, MN surrounded by his loving family.

The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, August 30, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge, MN with Rev. Kristin Ostercamp officiating. Burial will follow at Ekelund Cemetery, rural Goodridge. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Loren Jerry Race was born September 19, 1933 at home in Reiner Township, Pennington County, MN the son of Jerry and Tillie (Thompson) Race. He was baptized November 26, 1933 and confirmed on December 7, 1947 at Rosendahl Lutheran Church, rural Goodridge. Loren attended country school where he was taught by his mother and sister and graduated from Goodridge High School with the class of 1951. Following high school, Loren farmed on the family farmstead. From 1958 until 1964, Loren served Honorably in the United States Army National Guard.

On August 30, 1958, Loren was united in marriage to Ardis Marlene Blackstad at First Lutheran Church in Goodridge and they made their home on the Race Family Farm. On this farm they raised chickens, pigs and dairy cows along with small grains. To this union three children were born, Craig, Neil and Jennifer.

Loren worked as a substitute mail carrier for many years and eventually had his own route which he retired from on April 1, 1998. He was known throughout his route to give the kids Doublemint gum. Loren also played Santa Claus and brought joy to many during the Christmas season. He enjoyed life on the farm, traveling with Ardis, playing pinochle or any cards and teaching the grandkids how to drive in his old Ford pickup

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge where he served on the church council, Reiner Township Board member, Goodridge Lions Club, Goodridge School Board and caretaker at Rosendahl Cemetery for many years.

Loren was a quiet, family oriented man who never said a bad word about anyone. He had a great smile, was always willing to help, and was a very compassionate man. One of his highlights was traveling with his brother Bud to the state of Virginia to visit family and tour the District of Columbia.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 61 years, Ardis; children, Craig (Twyla) Race all of Goodridge, Neil (Debbie) Race of Hatton, ND and Jennifer (Paul) Eck of Superior, WI; 7 granddaughters, Kristen (Antonio) Alston, Brittany (Tony) Guttormson, Samantha (Andrew) Alme, Kimberly (Corey) Borowicz, Nicholle (Neil) Schroeder, Kaleena Eck, Rachel Eck; 7 great-grandchildren with one more on the way, Toby, Lucas, Blake, Maleah, Alistair, Arthur, Greta; brother and sister-in-law, Norman “Bud” & Darlene Blackstad; special friends, Gerry & Kathy Sunsdahl; and many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest “Bud” Race; and sisters, Edna Omlid and Bernice Grabowska.
