Clyde M. Swenson, 90, of Newfolden, MN passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Friday, September 20, 2019 at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN. The funeral service to celebrate Clyde’s life will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Westaker Free Lutheran Church with Rev. Wes Langaas and Pastor Raynard Huglen officiating. Burial will follow at Opdahl Cemetery, New Maine Township, Marshall County, MN.

Clyde Myron Swenson was born August 15, 1929 in Grafton, ND the son of Carl M. and Olga L. (Skadsem) Swenson. He was baptized into the Christian faith and confirmed at Alma Lutheran Church, rural Argyle, MN.  He attended Lincoln Country School through the eighth grade and then stayed home to work the farm after his mother’s death in 1944. At an early age, Clyde would bring his own team of horses and helped many farmers harvest their wheat and potatoes. He also traveled one winter to the west coast where he worked for a dairy farmer.

On November 16, 1951, Clyde entered into service in Minneapolis, MN with the United States Marines. He served in Korea during the Korean War and earned the rank of Sargent. He was Honorably Discharged on November 15, 1954 at Cherry Point, North Carolina.

At a movie in the summer of 1955, Clyde met the love of his life Beverly J. Nelson. They were married on September 1, 1956 at Telemarken Lutheran Church, rural Goodridge, MN. The couple lived in California the first winter and then settled in rural Thief River Falls. To this union four children were born, Craig Mason, Todd Alan, Wendy Jean and Scott Steven. In 1966 they made their home just west of Newfolden and have remained in the Newfolden area since.

Clyde and Beverly always had a dairy herd. In their early years of marriage, Clyde also worked on the railroad and as the years went by he worked road construction for various area construction companies including Thorson, Davidson and Thygeson. He enjoyed operating most heavy equipment but specialized in operating the blade.

He was a member of Westaker Free Lutheran Church, Newfolden American Legion Post 427 and has served as Westaker Cemetery sexton for many years. Clyde had a passion for horses especially the draft horses which he enjoyed breaking and driving. He bought and sold many teams over the years. Clyde and Beverly enjoyed dancing and music. He also enjoyed playing cards and games with friends and neighbors. Clyde dearly loved each member of his family and was very proud of them. Clyde was very social and meeting new people, no one was a stranger. He had a strong faith and motivated his children and grandchildren to memorize the ten commandments. Clyde was a hardworking man with a strong work ethic, whose handshake was symbolic of his honesty and integrity. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Beverly of Newfolden; children, Craig (Joni) Swenson of Perham, MN, Todd (Barb) Swenson of Newfolden, Wendy (Rick) Smith of Viking, MN and Scott (Jennifer) Swenson of Newfolden; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

He is preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Thomas J. Tungseth; and siblings, Roy Swenson, Harvey Swenson, Morris Swenson and Sybil Peterson.
