Gerald Amundgaard, 94, Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Greenleaf Assisted Living, Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM with a 5:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 23, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. John Golv & Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Argyle, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and United States Navy Honor Guard.
Gerald Amundgaard was born at home on August 12, 1925 in Argyle, MN the son of Ivar and Julia (Nygaard) Amundgaard. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Argyle. He attended school in Argyle and was drafted during his senior year into the United States Navy. During his military years, Jerry worked as an aircraft mechanic and was stationed in Bremerton, WA. Jerry was Honorably Discharged on June 6, 1946.
Following his discharge, Jerry attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. He then went to work for his Uncle Ben in Warren, MN at Amundgaard Implement.
On April 14, 1951, Jerry was united in marriage to Lois Anderson at the Community Presbyterian Church in Argyle, MN. They made their home in Warren, MN and to this union four children were born, Cristy, Randy, Jane and Julie.
In 1956 the family moved to Thief River Falls, MN where Jerry went into partnership with his brother, Everett and purchased the John Deere Dealership which they operated as Amundgaard Implement.
After retirement, Jerry had to keep busy so he drove school bus for a short time, worked at Ace Hardware for a short time and earned his real estate license and worked farm & land sales.
Jerry excelled at many hobbies throughout the years which included bird hunting, deer hunting, archery hunting and was an excellent shot with his bow and enjoyed competing in various matches throughout Minnesota. He also had a passion for woodworking; some of his work can be seen at Zion Lutheran Church including crosses for the students being confirmed, crosses for the tables downstairs, & doves carved out of wood from the front of the church which was removed when the church was remodeled. Jerry was such a perfectionist and was always working on something!
Jerry enjoyed going to the lake cabin near Bemidji on weekends with the family, traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Norway, fishing on Lake Of The Woods, spending time with his wife in their motorhome. Shaking dice for coffee with his buddies was a daily routine. Together they delivered many Meals-On-Wheels. Jerry and Lois were the biggest cheerleaders for their grandchildren and all of their endeavors.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on various boards, Lions Club, Hospice Board, American Legion Post 117 and the NRA.
Survivors include his children Cristy Amundgaard, Fargo, ND, Randy (Nancy) Amundgaard, Syracuse, IN, Jane (Mark) Hotzler, Lakeville, MN and Julie (Jeff) Olson, Thief River Falls; grandchildren Stephanie (Quenton) Scherer, Jaclyn (Greg) LaMere, Hanna, Abbie and Blaine Olson; great-grandchildren Devan, Dylan & Dayton Scherer, Keegan, Della & Hayes LaMere; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois; parents; and brothers Everett (Lois) and Roger (Bonnie).
