On August 10, 1974, Randy was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Joy Nelson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN. To this union three sons were born, Travas, Tony and Tyler. The family lived in Viking, MN where they had a small hobby farm for many years. The couple has lived in Newfolden for the past 14 years.

Randy worked summers with his dad and brother, Robin with car crushing during 9th & 10th grades. He worked at the Viking Elevator as Assistant Manager from the summer of his 11th grade in 1973 until 1979 when he went to work for Nelson/Larson Construction. He later worked at Bridgeman/Land-O-Lakes as a Night Foreman until suffering a severe back injury at work in 1985. Randy underwent several surgeries from this injury however he was unable to continue to work beyond 1989.

Over the next 31 years, Randy defied all medical odds in dealing with chronic back pain, multiple myeloma (2012), surviving a stem-cell transplant (2013) and everything that goes with cancer treatment. Bone cancer attacked his back and ribs leaving him physically weak and fragile but never diminishing his will to live or the strength of his spirit.

Randy was an example for everyone not to give up and to enjoy what you are given in life. He had a very strong faith and always said he could not get through his life without his faith. He was loving, giving, caring and funny. He loved people and telling stories, especially ones he made up for his grandkids. He was proud of his boys and grandkids, who were his greatest loves. His grandkids lit up his world and even when he was in pain they always made him smile. Randy enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and the History Channel. He had a vast knowledge of wildlife and the outdoors and shared his knowledge with many. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, playing horseshoes, darts, playing cards, gardening and spending time with his loving wife, kids & grandkids.
