Earl Gibson, 91 of Thief River Falls, MN passed away suddenly and peacefully on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Sanford Thief River Falls Medical Center with his loving wife at his side.

The service to celebrate Earl’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at the Evangelical Free Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Pastor Kevin MacLean and Pastor Kent Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Monday, December 30, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Military honors will be provided by Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Earl Davis Gibson was born November 3, 1928 in Rock County, MN the youngest of seven children born to John and Nell (Randolph) Gibson of rural Beaver Creek, MN. On June 14, 1931, Earl was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. He graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1946, and attended St. Paul farm campus of University of Minnesota and Worthington Junior College.

On January 16, 1951, Earl entered into service with the United States Army National Guard at Luverne, MN. He spent two years at Camp Rucker, Alabama and honorably served twenty years in the National Guard as a Platoon Sgt.

Earl met a school teacher from Luverne, MN by the name of Loreen “Lorry” Kolhei. They were united in marriage on November 24, 1955 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church near Cottonwood, MN. To this union three children were born, Leann, Jon and Joleen. The family lived in different locations including Milwaukee, Beaver Creek, Marshall, St. Cloud and since 1969 they have resided in Thief River Falls, MN.

He worked in the banking business in Beaver Creek and Marshall before going to work for the State of Minnesota Commerce Department from 1968 until 1991 as a Bank Examiner.

Earl enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling throughout the United States with Lorry.

He volunteered with the Kiwanis Club in Thief River Falls since it was formed in 1977 and represented the club in five international conventions in Miami, Orlando, Indianapolis, Nashville and Los Angeles. Earl attended many district conventions and helped with the Lincoln High Key Club to various fall and spring rallies. He enjoyed volunteering at various local events including the Pennington County Fair, Hole-In-One Contest, Meals-On-Wheels and Boy Scouts.

Earl was a member of the American Legion Post 117 in Thief River Falls where he was active with the Color Guard. He helped present the Colors at various local functions. Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church since 1969 and for the past few years has enjoyed attending the Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Loreen “Lorry” of Thief River Falls; children, Leann (Joel) Stolaas of Oklee, MN, Jon Gibson of Thief River Falls, and Joleen (Scott) Kezar of Warroad, MN; granddaughters, Kelsie (Jeff) Krein of Thief River Falls, Katie Kezar of Fargo, and Kendra (Cole) Hunt of Thief River Falls; great-grandsons, Alex & Jack Krein, Mason & Nolan Hunt; brother, Gene Gibson of Reedsport, OR; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marshall Gibson, William Gibson, Foster Gibson, Curtis Gibson & Beverly Beyer.
