Grace Hjelle, 83 of Stephen, MN passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral Service for Grace Hjelle will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Westaker Lutheran Church, Newfolden, MN. Burial will be held at Westaker Lutheran Cemetery at Newfolden, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
Grace Hjelle was born February 25, 1936 to Hjalmer and Hannah (Hanson) Hjelle in Marsh Grove township, Minnesota.
Grace was baptized and later confirmed at Westaker Church, Newfolden. She attended country school until 8th grade.
In addition to work on the family farm near Newfolden, she worked at various jobs such as babysitting, at the restaurant in Newfolden, potato fields near Florian, and the turkey plant in Thief River Falls. After retirement, she worked in the lunchroom at various East Grand Forks Schools and sold her lefse.
Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, and lefse making. She made lots of sweet treats for family birthday parties. Her strawberry-rhubarb jam and other jellies were wonderful, as were her homemade soups. She enjoyed going to see her granddaughters’ school programs and activities, and birthday trips to the casino with her granddaughters. She liked to visit her granddaughter’s daycare and found more children to call her grandma.
She is survived by daughter Jody Anderson of East Grand Forks; granddaughters Heather Anderson of Fargo, and Nicole (Eric Hendrickson) Anderson of Moorhead; siblings Hilton (Ruby) Hjelle of Grand Forks, Jimmy (Betty) Hjelle of Newfolden, and Linda (Dennis) Walz of Stephen; sister-in-law Gwen Hjelle; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Along with her cat, Callie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Clarice (Carl) Hjelle, Kenny Hjelle, Clayton and wife, Joan Hjelle, and sister-in-law Avis Hjelle.
