An imposter who claims to be a law enforcement officer has been stopping drivers in Clay and Becker counties.

At least two incidents have been reported. Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says one driver reported being stopped in Hitterdal, Minn. where the imposter asked to see a driver’s license and then told the driver to slow down.

“We do have somebody out there driving a white unmarked SUV that was described as a Jeep Grand Cherokee stopping people. He is not a law enforcement officer. He’s described as somebody in his late 20’s or 30’s and has a beard.”

A similar incident involving a vehicle with the same description happened in becker county. A woman on a county road was stopped near Lake Park. In both cases, the man’s vehicle had flashing multi-colored lights.

Empting says drivers who ware stopped by someone who won’t display credentials should call 9-1-1.
