Obert Sunsdahl, 77, of Thief River Falls passed away on Monday April 27, 2020 at Oakland Park Communities in Thief River Falls, MN.

A private family service to celebrate Obert’s life will be held with Rev. Daryl Cory officiating.

A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM on Friday, May 15, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. CDC guidelines will be followed.  Military honors will be at 2:30 PM at Ekelund Cemetery, rural Goodridge, MN.

Obert Vernon Sunsdahl was born December 6, 1942 at Mercy Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN the son of Henry and Gertrude (Bjornaraa) Sunsdahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Ekelund Lutheran Church rural Goodridge, MN. He attended country school in Star Township, Pennington County where he was raised and graduated from Goodridge High School with the class of 1961.

Following graduation, Obert stayed at home for a few years to help on the family farm. In December of 1964, Obert entered into service with the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for 18 months. Following his Honorable Discharge in November of 1966 Obert returned to the family farm in Star Township. He also worked at Detroiter in Red Lake Falls, MN.

Obert married the love of his life Sandra Ostgarden on August 30, 1969 the couple were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. They made their home in Thief River Falls and to this union two daughters were born, Kim and Kelsi. In 1975 the family moved to Hibbing, MN where Obert worked for a window company. In 1979 they returned to live in Thief River Falls where they have continued to reside.

Obert worked for a short time at Hydra Mac and the school system in Thief River Falls before starting employment with the Electric Department for the City of Thief River Falls in July of 1981 in the position of Meter Reader. In 1987, Obert was awarded a special commendation by the City Council for his awareness that something wasn’t right when seeing papers on the porch of an 88-year old resident. The lady had been laying inside her home with broken bones in both feet unable to use her wall phone or summon help for 24 hours. He heard her cries for help and called the proper authorities to assist her. He also took time to visit her in the hospital and again at home during her recovery. Obert continued to work for the city until his retirement in December 2007 due to health issues.

He enjoyed bowling in the earlier years and especially loved his time spent with family and tinkering in his shop and garage. Obert was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a 40 year member of the Eagle’s Club.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 50 years, Sandy of Thief River Falls; daughters, Kim (James) Hiemstra of Thief River Falls and Kelsi (fiancé Jesse Wilson) of Newfolden; grandchildren, Casey, Ayden, Sophia and Logan; step-granddaughter, Brooklynn; brother, Alvin (Sharyl) Sunsdahl of Goodridge, MN; sisters, Emma Kapla of Hibbing, MN and Janice (Orrin) Haugen of Duluth, MN; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Libertie; brothers, Hubert (Lila), Virgil “Bud” (JoAnn), George “Mick”, Roy, and Floyd (Vivian) Sunsdahl.
