David Rasmussen, 77, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. CDC regulations will be followed. Burial will be at the German Evangelical Cemetery near Middle River, MN.
David Allen Rasmussen was born January 27, 1943 in Thief River Falls, MN the son of Gerald and Marie (Wagner) Morris. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Middle River, MN. Following the marriage of Marie to Walter Rasmussen he was legally adopted by Walter. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Middle River. Dave grew up in Middle River and graduated from Middle River High School with the class of 1960.
Following high school, Dave worked different jobs in the area and also worked in Montana and Washington where he lived until being drafted into the United States Army on December 9, 1964. He did his basic training at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina and was stationed in Germany. He was trained as a diesel mechanic and worked with base security patrolling the Czechoslovakian border. Dave was honorably discharged on November 25, 1966 and was transferred to the United States Army Reserve until his obligation was complete on December 8, 1970.
Following his honorable discharge, Dave worked at Standard Oil in Middle River for a year and then began working for Cenex in Thief River Falls. Through the years, he also worked for Cenex in St. Hilaire and Goodridge. Dave retired from Cenex in 2010.
On July 7, 1973, Dave married the love of his life, Renee Risteigen in Oslo, MN and they made their home in Middle River. Later they moved to St. Hilaire for a short time while building their home in Rocksbury Township, south of Thief River Falls in 1982 where they have continued to reside.
Dave volunteered with the St. Hilaire Fire & Rescue Department for over 20 years and made homemade spaghetti sauce for their annual fund raiser. He also worked as an EMT-I for Thief River Falls Ambulance for a number of years. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 117 and a longtime member of the Eagle’s Club in Thief River Falls.
Dave had a passion for feeding the deer and birds in his yard and going camping in the summer with Renee. He had a mischievous sense of humor, would help anyone in need and was great at cooking & baking.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Renee; brother, Daniel (Lynnae) Rasmussen of Warroad, MN, Patricia (Wayne) Grindberg of Fargo, ND, Maleen (James) Morris of Kansas City, MO, Robin (Pete) Petersen of Belton, MO, Kevin (Carol) Morris of Overland Park, KS, Geriann Vassar of Flemington, MO, Bettie Martinez of Kansas City, MO, Michael (Sara) Cummins of Kansas City, MO; nephews, Terry (Ellie Raymond) Rasmussen, Darryl (Heidi Noetzel) Rasmussen and Paul (Delaine) Rasmussen all of Thief River Falls; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Kelly Morris, Scott Morris, Janeen Brown, Pamela Kennedy; sisters-in-law, Katherine Rasmussen; brother-in-law, Richard Vassar; and niece, Nancy Kay Rasmussen.
