Andrew Joppru, 83 of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away on Wednesday, July 08, 2020 at the Fargo Veterans Administration Medical Center.
The Memorial Service to celebrate Andy’s life will be 10:30 AM on Monday, July 13, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with Loiell Dyrud officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be at Satersdal Cemetery, Excel Township, Marshall County, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117, Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and United States Air Force Honor Guard.
Andrew Lloyd Joppru was born at his parents’ home, September 22, 1936, the son of Olaf and Gertrude (Thompson) Joppru. His parents were renting from Olaf’s uncle on his mother’s side, Olaf and Martha (Swenson) Bergland, located near the current Thief River Falls Airport.
Andrew was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Black River Lutheran Church. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN in 1955. On January 18th 1956 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and took basic training at Parks Air Force Base in California. He was an Air Policeman his entire enlistment. He served at Goose Air Force Base, Labrador, Canada, and was honorably discharged at Ellsworth Air Force Base on April 17th, 1960. Andrew was awarded Air Force outstanding unit award, GO15/59, DAF AFLSA (19 Jan, 59).
He continued his education, under the GI Bill, graduating from Ely Junior College and earned a BA Degree from the University/Duluth, after which he took a year of Law School at the University of North Dakota in 1969.
On his way to Fairbanks, AK, to make his fortune, he met his future wife, Jeanie Birch, in Whitehorse Yukon Territory, Canada. He worked in Fairbanks for GSI, a branch of Texas Instruments based in Dallas, TX. As an Expeditor his work involved supporting oil exploration crews on the North Slope, out of Dead Horse, AK. He returned to Minnesota, working in residential construction around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area as a journeyman cement finisher.
On July 31, 1971, he and Jeanie were married in East Hatley, Quebec, Canada, and made their home in West St. Paul, MN. Later that year, they returned to Thief River Falls, starting their business Joppru Enterprises, Wholesale Marketing. After being in business for 27 years, due to health concerns, he embarked on a new career. He attended East Grand Forks Community College taking the Truck Driver Training course. In that career he drove over the road for 19 years while Jeanie worked full time at Digi-Key in Thief River Falls. He was a member of American Legion Post #0117 and the Eagles Club of Thief River Falls. He served on the board of the Satersdal Cemetery Association until his death.
Survivors include his wife Jeanie, sister Susan (Joppru) Wall and brother-in-law Dale Wall, Hampton, NB, brother-in-law Robert (Bob) Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Peter and Doreen Asbil Grenville, Quebec, Canda, stepsister Luann (Johnson) Zieman, Montello, WI, and sister-in-law Rosalie Joppru, Englewood, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Gertrude Joppru, a sister Sandra (Joppru) Nelson, brother David Joppru, and stepfather James T. Johnson.
