Audrey Maki, 84 of Newfolden, MN passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN with her loving family by her side.

The Graveside Service to celebrate Audrey’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden, MN with Rev. Cathie Rhodes officiating. Bring a lawn chair and practice social distancing.

Audrey Holmos was born December 26, 1935 in Thief River Falls, MN to Elmer and Violet (Nelson) Holmos. She was baptized into the Christian faith. She attended elementary school in Middle River and graduated from Newfolden High School with the class of 1953. Audrey then went on to Business School in East Grand Forks.

Audrey met her future husband E.J. Maki in 1957 and they were married on March 21, 1959 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN. The couple made their home in Newfolden and to this union four children were born, Jay, Dan, Dianne and Tom.

The family traveled with E.J. while he was working road construction. In the early 1960’s E.J. purchased the gas station in Newfolden and Audrey went to work as a secretary in the Newfolden School District. She later went to work in Strandquist as a Title One Teacher until the building closed in 1991. Then she went to the Thief River Falls School District as a Para Pro. Audrey finished her career after 51 years of serving children in 2009 at Marshall County Central in Newfolden.

Audrey loved her family, friends, road trips, social gatherings at her house, flower gardening, knitting & teaching her grandchildren how to knit and taking care of her wonderful pets. Audrey’s door was always open; her home was a gathering place for her children, grandchildren and friends.

Audrey believed in and inspired people to be their best. She had a way of encouraging people to see the best in every situation, to keep moving forward and to always have hope.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden.

Survivors include three children, Dan Maki of Newfolden, Dianne Darling of Spearfish, SD and Tom Maki of Newfolden; 6 grandchildren, Andrea (Nick) Jorstad, Lydia Darling, Evan Maki, Tracy (Nate) Darling-DeMarcus, Jay Darling and Peter Darling; 5 great-grandchildren, Kaycee, Karlee, Kian, Arlo and Kade; many other relatives and friends; and her dogs, Hazel & Yogi.

She is preceded in death by her husband, E.J. in 1989; son, Jay in 1979; parents; sister, Yvonne (Robert) Wheadon in 2009; and great-grandsons, Eli & Levi.
