Marian Gigstad, 101 of Moorhead, MN formerly of Thief River Falls, MN passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at Eventide Assisted Living.
Marian Erickson was born on October 24, 1918, in Karlstad, MN, to Swen and Selma (Pearson) Erickson. She graduated from Karlstad H.S. in 1936 and continued her education at Moorhead Teacher’s College receiving 2-year and 4-year degrees. For 37 ½ years, Marian taught elementary school mostly in MN, the last 23 years in the Thief River Falls School District.
In 1945, Marian married Klemens Gigstad and they lived most of their married life in St. Hilaire, MN, and Thief River Falls, MN. They had two sons: Kent who was born in 1948 but died in infancy, and Kurt who was born in 1949 but died in 2007; they also hosted Cesar Sanchez, a foreign exchange student from Peru, who was able to return to MN to celebrate Marian’s 100th birthday with her. In 2009, Marian moved to Moorhead to be closer to family.
Marian loved teaching, especially first grade, and was happy to encounter former students; five months ago she moved into the Care Center and was greeted by a staff member who was a former student! She also enjoyed reading, gardening, baking, sewing, and painting. Most of all, Marian enjoyed her family and providing the comforts and love of a home for them, as well as the extended family of nieces and nephews and their children.
Preceding Marian in death were her husband, sons, parents, and siblings. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Susan Gigstad, Fargo, ND; grandsons: Kristopher, Plymouth, MN, Grant (Erin), Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren: Aniston, Beckett, and Declan, Fargo, ND, and several nieces and nephews.
