Leslie Floyd Swanson was born on January 25, 1944 to George and Katherine (Anton) Swanson. Leslie died on August 20, at the age of 76, with his children by his side. Les was united in marriage to Bernadette Swedenburg on November 1, 1963. They spent their lives together enjoying each other’s company and raising their family. Bernie was the love of his life and they are once again together, right where Leslie wanted to be.
Les thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. He spent countless hours on Lake of the Woods fishing for walleyes. Les would spend hours in the boat putting whoever was with him “on the fish.” In his younger days, he enjoyed spending time at Lake Buzzle. Leslie also enjoyed deer season. You never heard him complain about it being too cold or wet. He enjoyed the early mornings in his stand and the evening at home with a hot meal and his home full of his children and grandchildren.
Les was an avid woodworker and tinkerer. Many of his projects can be seen in his home and in the homes of his children. As life slowed down, he enjoyed making quilts and sharing them with those whom he loved. Les also enjoyed a quick trip to the casino, never spending much money, but almost always leaving just a bit “ahead.” He also enjoyed scratch cards. There always seemed to be a winner or two laying around the house. Another favorite pastime was to go to rummage sales. Les loved to find treasures!
Les retired from United Parcel Service where he worked for his adult career as a fleet mechanic. When he wasn’t working at UPS, he could be found working side by side with brother Skippy, building and remodeling houses. Leslie was also a volunteer firefighter with the Thief River Falls Fire Department. He loved being able to assist his community in this capacity.
Les is survived by his children Tim Swanson of Thief River Falls, MN, Tonie (Mike) Scheef of Warroad MN, Travis (Kristen) Swanson of Gwinner, ND, and Stefanie (Dennis) Youngberg of Askov, MN, ten grandchildren, Alicia(Tyler Davis ) Dykes, Zachary (Travis) Swanson , Devin Scheef, Danae (Conner) Riley , Danica (Logan) Neumiller, Dylan Swanson, Aydan Swanson, Keagan Swanson, Reace Youngberg and Shaw Youngberg. Two great grandchildren, Colin Dykes and Harper Davis. Sisters, Lillian Richards and Sharon Bugge; brother Oliver (Skip) Swanson, along with many nieces, nephews, brother and sister in-laws.
Les is preceded in death by his parents George and Katherine Swanson, his loving wife Bernadette. His brothers and sisters, Eleanor, Chester, Donnie, Dennis, Clifford, Leonard, and brother and sister in-laws.
A special thank you to Denise, Skippy and Tim. Their steadfast love for Les was apparent, especially after the death of Bernadette. There was seldom, if ever a day that he was not visited by them. Leslie’s story will live on in his family. He taught his children to work hard, to enjoy life and to say “I love you.” This is a legacy worth leaving behind.
