Larry Duane Pittman was born along with his twin brother Gary Wayne on November 29, 1944 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN to Gordon and Gladys (Sabo) Pittman. He was baptized by his grandfather Rev. E.O. Sabo and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Larry attended school in Goodridge graduating with the class of 1962.

Following high school, Larry moved to a ranch near Great Falls, MT where he worked as ranch hand and hunting guide. He truly enjoyed his experience in Montana working with the horses, and the peace and tranquility of being in the mountains.

Larry entered into service with the North Dakota Air National Guard and did his basic training in Texas before returning to make his home in Thief River Falls. In July of 1966 during a social gathering at the Cozy Bar in Brooks, MN, Larry met his future wife, Loretta Berberich. On November 1, 1966, Larry was involved in an automobile accident which resulted in his medical discharge from the North Dakota Air National Guard.

On August 12, 1967 the couple were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Brooks, MN. They lived in Thief River Falls for a couple of years before making their home on a farm east of St. Hilaire, MN. To this union three children were born, Loren, Lorray and Lana. They farmed small grains and raised beef cattle along with many other animals. In the early 1980’s they purchased farmland and the homestead where Larry was raised in Moylan Township, north of Goodridge, MN. He thought of his home and the Goodridge area as “God’s Country.” In 1990 they built a home in Thief River Falls where they have continued to reside.

In his younger years, Larry worked at Detroiter in Red Lake Falls, MN and then went trucking for Hartz Wholesale and Bridgeman’s/Dean Foods in Thief River Falls. He retired in 2009 and in his retirement, Larry loved to go catch walleyes at Lake-of-the-Woods and spend time at his lake home. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, snowmobiling, farming, bowling and playing cards & bingo.

Larry worked hard his entire life, was always willing to help, had a heart of gold, always looked for a way to socialize and be with his family and friends, he added a bit of charisma to any occasion, and was very honest with his comments. Even after being diagnosed with dementia, Larry still maintained his sense of humor.

He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Eagle’s Club and American Legion Post 117 all in Thief River Falls.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Loretta; children, Loren (Lisa) Pittman of Thief River Falls, Lorray (Steve) Rolfer of Little Canada, MN and Lana (Mark) Bruggeman of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Linzie (Austin) Przybylski, Bailey, Nick, Noah, Blake, Raynee and Maddy; great-granddaughter, Ava; sister, Darlene Ellefson; brother, Roger (RaeAnn) Pittman; all of the Berberich family; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
