Jerry Johnson, 76 of Thief River Falls, MN passed away peacefully on Friday, November 6, 2020 at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, November 13, 2020 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Please follow CDC guidelines, wear your face mask and practice social distancing.

Gerald Andrew Johnson was born March 3, 1944 in Crookston, MN the son of Archie and Betty (Kruse) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith. He attended the St. Hilaire School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls with the class of 1963. Jerry then went on to the Auto Body Program at the AVTI in Thief River Falls.

Jerry was married to Kathy Johnson and to this union two children were born, Darren and Wendy.

Jerry worked several jobs driving truck in the Thief River Falls area including Coke Bottling Co., Grain Belt Beer, Hartz Foods & Hartz Truckline. As a hobby, he and a friend had Johnson Tree Service & Chimney Repair for many years.

On September 25, 1970, Jerry married Joyce Elizabeth (Whalen) Gehrls in Sisseton, SD and they returned to make their home in Thief River Falls. Together they made a relationship which was filled with many great memories. Jerry graciously welcomed her four children, Joni, Lee, Carol and Paul and helped raise them as his own.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and supplying the neighborhood with fresh vegetables. He also loved dogs, cats and animals. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Jerry was a very social person who loved visiting with people he knew and people he didn’t know. Jerry was a patient, generous and kind man, always willing to help where he could and when needed.

Joyce passed away March 19, 2012 and Jerry lost the love of his life. On October 30, 2015, Jerry moved to McIntosh Senior Living where he has continued to reside.

Jerry was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and the Eagle’s Club in Thief River Falls.

Survivors include his loving children, Joni (Terry) Brandon, Carol (Bill) Sanner and Paul (Barb) Gehrls all of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Kyle (Hannah) Dobias, Alicia (Jeremy Wilson) Dobias, Breanna (Kolt) Wavra, Brandon Gehrls, Troy Brandon, Jenny Brandon, Chris Brandon, Chassity (Danny) Pemberton; several great-grandchildren; Joyce’s siblings and their spouses; numerous nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; parents; son, Lee; and numerous relatives and in-laws.
