Janice Anton Semanko was born July 23, 1938, the daughter of Lorenz Anton and Dorothy (Fuller) Anton in Thief River Falls, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
She grew up on the family farm attending grades 1-5 at Knox School, then transferred to St. Hilaire for grades 5-8. She then attended Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls where she graduated in 1956.
She and two friends left TRF immediately after graduating to go to Milwaukee, WI, to find work. It was in Milwaukee that she met Clarence Semanko and knew he would be her husband. They married in 1957 and remained in Milwaukee to work. Their first son, Murray, was born in WI. In the course of two years, they moved back to TRF to farm with her father. Here, Michael, Martin, and Mitchell were born. As they grew and started school, Janice joined the school PTA and helped with anything the boys were involved in. As the boys got older and involved in sports and music, Janice followed them where she was needed. Besides raising the boys on the farm, Janice became active with her church LWML, council board, and Bible study groups. When her father became ill, the farm was sold, and she and Clarence found work and a home in TRF.
Throughout the years, Janice worked at the Best Western, the Jewel Box, and DigiKey, from which she retired in 2009. Janice also supported and/or was involved with the Christian Women’s Club, Sports Boosters, the library book club, the TRF Community Theatre, the Miss TRF pageant, and LHS sports/music programs. She was also an avid reader and loved traveling, garage sales, thrift stores, and auction sales.
In 1989, Janice joined Clarence as a member of the St. Bernard’s community and together they attended church and enjoyed teaching confirmation classes.
In 2013, they moved to Fargo where she has since resided at Bethany Homes where she enjoyed meeting many new friends.
Family was very important to Janice, and she took every chance she could to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her sons Murray (Linda) of Fargo, Michael (Laurie) of Fargo, Martin (Lisa) of Thief River Falls, and Mitchell (Lorinda) of Fargo; 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, sister, Carol Kooyer, sister-in-law Fran, and many other relatives including nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; brothers Lorenz, Jr. (Sam), Tommy, and infant Herbert; and niece Kerri.
